In America, we LOVE our sugar. Being a huge fan of the sweet stuff myself, its a lot harder to just cut out desserts. For me, it goes way back to childhood and sugar revolves around memories of family get togethers, traveling the world, and bonding over baking. Added sugar is in everything we consume from ketchup, to pre made sauces, and your coffee house order. Even fruit isn’t safe as over the years the farmers and food distributors specifically pick the sweeter varieties, because at the end of the day you still need to give the people what they want. With the ease of having everything readily available, cooked, pre packaged, and processed this has made it easier than ever to get the most calories for the least amount of work. I once read that if you wanted apple pie, ice cream, and chocolate bars you could have it all, you just have to make it all yourself, from start to finish. I would never advocate cutting it out of your diet completely ( umm those are some of the best things in life!), but try to cut back on the crap. Don’t forget you are what you eat.
Personally I try to make as much as possible and pay top dollar to buy direct from small bakeshops or farmers at the local market. Sweets and all included. It may not be the prettiest thing you’ve ever encountered, and is blemished and scarred, but hey so is life sometimes. I won’t stop eating desserts or added sugar but I am making a step to being more mindful about how much excess sugar we consume and the easiest way to do that is to make it yourself. Another sweet treat? Go for a walk outside and pick up some country road flowers!
